Title 32 › CHAPTER 5 — TRAINING › § 503
Lets the Secretary of the Army and the Secretary of the Air Force, under rules the President sets, allow National Guard units to take part in field or coast‑defense training such as encampments, maneuvers, live‑fire practice, or other exercises. They can train alone or together with the Army or Air Force. This also covers joint drills to prepare the Guard for civil emergencies and disasters. Money for pay, food, travel, and other proper costs for any part of the National Guard of a State, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the District of Columbia, Guam, or the Virgin Islands can come from that unit’s field or coast‑defense instruction funds. Guard members who are mustered for an exercise can be paid for the time from leaving home until returning, as decided beforehand; correct payments are credited to the disbursing officer.
