Under rules the President sets and when a governor (or the governors of Puerto Rico, Guam, or the Virgin Islands) or the DC National Guard commander recommends it, the Secretary of the Army or the Secretary of the Air Force may allow a limited number of Guard members to get extra training. For the Army, National Guard members may attend any service school except the United States Military Academy, or be attached to a matching Army unit for hands-on training near an Army post during field exercises. For the Air Force, Air National Guard members may attend any service school except the United States Air Force Academy, or be attached to a matching Air Force unit for practical instruction at an air base during field training.
