Title 33 › CHAPTER 24 — VESSEL BRIDGE-TO-BRIDGE COMMUNICATION › § 1203
Ships and certain workboats must have a radiotelephone on board unless section 1206 says otherwise. This rule covers four kinds of vessels: power-driven vessels 20 meters or longer, vessels of 100 gross tons or more carrying passengers for hire, towing vessels 26 feet or longer, and dredges or floating plants working near channels that could affect other boats. The radio must work from the ship’s navigational bridge (or the dredge’s main control station). It must send and receive on frequencies in the 156–162 Mega‑Hertz band using the emission types the FCC sets after consulting other agencies, so crews can share navigation information. The radio must be carried when the vessel is on United States navigable waters, including the territorial sea defined in Presidential Proclamation 5928 of December 27, 1988.
