Title 33 › Chapter 30— INTERNATIONAL REGULATIONS FOR PREVENTING COLLISIONS AT SEA › § 1608
Operators who break the rules under this chapter can be fined up to $5,000 for each violation. A vessel can also be fined up to $5,000 per violation, except a public vessel used for noncommercial purposes, and that vessel may be seized and taken to a U.S. district court where it is found. The Secretary in charge of the Coast Guard’s department can impose these fines, but only after giving the person or vessel owner notice and a chance for a hearing. The Secretary can cancel, reduce, or settle a penalty for good reason. If the fine is not paid, the Secretary can ask the Attorney General to sue in federal court to collect it and seek other appropriate relief.
