§3029 Temporary Appointments

Title 33 › Chapter 43— NATIONAL OCEANIC AND ATMOSPHERIC ADMINISTRATION COMMISSIONED OFFICER CORPS › Subchapter II— APPOINTMENT AND PROMOTION OF OFFICERS › § 3029

Last updated Apr 5, 2026|Official source

Summary

The President can make temporary appointments at the grades of ensign, lieutenant junior grade, or lieutenant. These temporary appointments end when the President approves a permanent appointment for that same position. People in those temporary grades are ranked by the dates of their appointments. If two are appointed on the same date, the Secretary decides who ranks first. If the Secretary thinks it is best for the officer corps, the President can temporarily promote an officer one grade above their permanent grade. That temporary promotion ends when the officer moves to a new assignment.
