If an officer dies while on active duty, the Secretary can use Administration funds to move the officer’s personal and household belongings to the officer’s official residence of record. If the officer’s dependents ask, the Secretary can instead send those belongings to another place the Secretary chooses. Under rules the Secretary sets, Administration funds can also repay an officer for food, clothing, medicines, and other supplies the officer provided (1) to give temporary help to people in remote areas, or (2) to shipwrecked people the officer temporarily cared for.
