The Secretary can pay the interest and any special allowances that build up on one or more student loans for an eligible officer. An officer is eligible while serving on active duty, has not completed more than three years of active duty, is the borrower on unpaid loans under parts B, D, or E of Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965, and is not in default. Payments may be made for up to 36 consecutive months while eligible. The Secretary must work with the Secretary of Education and may repay that Department for the loan payments and for reasonable administrative costs. "Special allowance" means the allowance under section 438 of the Higher Education Act (20 U.S.C. 1087–1).
