Defines three important words used in this part. Characterization/characterize/characterizing means collecting detailed data and expert analysis about a specific ocean area (seafloor, below it, the water column, or water features like currents) to help research, environmental protection, resource use, policy, or missions. Exploration/explore/exploring means doing a broad first study of an unknown or little-known ocean area and making an initial read of its physical, chemical, geological, biological, archaeological, or other features. Map/mapping means gathering detailed measurements to show seafloor depth, shape, surface type, sediments, underlying geology, and bottom plants and animals.
