Title 33 › Chapter 48— OCEAN AND COASTAL MAPPING INTEGRATION › § 3504
The Administrator may run up to three joint ocean and coastal mapping centers, including one joint hydrographic center. Each center must be located with a college or university. The centers will be hydrographic centers of excellence and can do work needed under this law, including developing new mapping tools and data, mapping the United States Outer Continental Shelf and other areas, processing new types of data, using remote sensing and uncrewed systems for things like fish habitat and coral mapping, and offering graduate training for NOAA Commissioned Officer Corps members, other agency staff with mapping programs, and civilians.
