Coastal acidification: coastal oceans, estuaries, and the Great Lakes becoming more acidic and changing water chemistry because of air pollution, freshwater inflows, and too much nutrient runoff. Ocean acidification: the oceans and connected waters (including estuaries and the Great Lakes) becoming more acidic from carbon dioxide in the air and from decaying organic matter. Secretary: the U.S. Secretary of Commerce acting through the NOAA Administrator. Subcommittee: the National Science and Technology Council Subcommittee on Ocean Science and Technology. State: every U.S. state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and other U.S. territories or possessions.
