Title 33 › Chapter 11— BRIDGES OVER NAVIGABLE WATERS › Subchapter II— ALTERATION OF BRIDGES › § 519
Bridge owners must obey any lawful order from the Secretary under this law. If an owner willfully refuses to follow an order, they commit a crime and, if convicted, can be fined up to $5,000. Each month the owner keeps disobeying counts as a new offense and can bring another penalty. If an owner still won’t comply, the Secretary can have the bridge and related work removed and charge the owner for the cost. The United States can sue the owner to recover those costs. A court where the bridge is located can order removal or other relief, and the Attorney General can start those court actions when the Secretary asks.
