Title 33 › Chapter 12— RIVER AND HARBOR IMPROVEMENTS GENERALLY › Subchapter III— ACQUISITION OF LAND AND MATERIALS › § 598a
When the Secretary gets land or makes someone else get land for a water project, the Secretary must follow the Uniform Relocation Assistance and Real Property Acquisition Policies Act of 1970 (42 U.S.C. 4601 et seq.) and choose the smallest land interest needed to support the project. Before buying full ownership, the Secretary must first try temporary easements or other limited rights that lower the project cost, speed up work, and cut down conflicts with property owners. The Secretary should also consider a State’s land‑acquisition steps when they fit the project’s goals.
