Grants (except those for hiring or rehiring career law enforcement officers) can be renewed for up to 2 extra years after the first fiscal year of the grant. The Attorney General must find that the money was spent as the approved plan required, and the recipient must show real progress toward the grant goals. Grants for hiring or rehiring career law enforcement officers can be renewed up to 5 years under the same conditions. No multi‑year grant plus renewals can last more than 3 years total, except hiring‑officer grants, which cannot exceed 5 years total.
