Title 34 › Subtitle Subtitle I— Comprehensive Acts › Chapter 121— VIOLENT CRIME CONTROL AND LAW ENFORCEMENT › Subchapter II— CRIME PREVENTION › Part G— Family Unity Demonstration Project › Subpart 1— grants to states › § 12251
The Attorney General can give competitive grants to States to run family unity demonstration projects. These projects help eligible offenders live in community correctional facilities with their children. Grants are awarded under rules the Attorney General makes and the awards consider the preferences below. The Attorney General prefers States that promise certain things: the corrections and health/human services agencies will work closely together; local community advisory boards will be set up; prisoners will be placed as close to their homes as possible when eligible; the project will start within 180 days of getting a grant and the grant money will be spent during a 1-year period; the State can keep the facility operating after the grant ends; the State will follow a participant selection process (notice to a prisoner within 30 days, accept applications when the prisoner has more than 180 days left, review applications in order, and decide within 50 days); and courts can sentence eligible offenders directly to a community correctional facility.
