Title 34 › Subtitle Subtitle I— Comprehensive Acts › Chapter 121— VIOLENT CRIME CONTROL AND LAW ENFORCEMENT › Subchapter VII— POLICE CORPS AND LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS TRAINING AND EDUCATION › Part A— Police Corps › § 12555
The Director can give scholarships or reimbursements to students who agree to work for a State or local police force. Each academic-year payment is no more than $10,000 (or the student’s actual school costs). If a student studies for nearly a whole calendar year, payments that year can be up to $13,333. No student can get more than $40,000 total. The Director usually pays the school directly. If the school gets more than the cost of tuition, fees, and room and board, it must give the extra money to the student. Payments keep coming only while the school says the student is making satisfactory progress. Scholarships must be used at a 4‑year college, but can cover graduate or professional study. If a student joins after transferring into a 4‑year school, the Director may pay for earlier costs. Every recipient must sign an agreement to finish the required education and Police Corps training, and then work for 4 years in a State or local police force. If the student does not meet these rules, they must repay the money plus 10% interest. If the student dies or becomes permanently and totally disabled, the agreement is not broken. The Director can replace repayment with community service for disability or good cause. The Director will try promptly to collect any money from those who break the agreement. Applicants must apply in the way the Director requires.
