Title 34 › Subtitle Subtitle II— Protection of Children and Other Persons › Chapter 209— CHILD PROTECTION AND SAFETY › Subchapter I— SEX OFFENDER REGISTRATION AND NOTIFICATION › Part A— Sex Offender Registration and Notification › § 20913
Sex offenders must register and keep their registration up to date in every jurisdiction where they live, where they work, and where they go to school. For the first registration only, they must also register where they were convicted if that place is different from where they live. They must register before finishing a prison sentence for the offense, or within 3 business days after being sentenced if they are not sent to prison. If a sex offender changes name, address, job, or student status, they must appear in person within 3 business days at least once in a jurisdiction where they are required to register and give the new information. That place must immediately share the update with the other jurisdictions where the person must be registered. The Attorney General can set rules for people convicted before this law took effect or for those who cannot meet the timing rules. Every jurisdiction, except federally recognized Indian tribes, must make failing to register a crime punishable by more than 1 year in prison.
