Summary

Use the Program to bring federal, State, and local agencies, the U.S. Attorney, community groups, victims’ advocates, and researchers together to make neighborhoods safer by reducing violent crime. The Program does three main things: it creates and carries out strategic plans to reduce violent crime (including enforcing gun laws and targeting the people or groups causing most of the violence); it runs proven, data-driven prevention and intervention efforts (like juvenile justice projects, street outreach, conflict mediation, treatment, social services, and efforts to change community norms); and it tracks results, such as changes in the violent crime rate, incarceration rate, and repeat offending. The Attorney General can use the money for competitive, evidence-based programs to reduce gun and gang crime, the Edward Byrne Criminal Justice Innovation Program, community-based violence prevention projects, and gang and youth violence education, prevention, and intervention.
