Title 35 › Part III— PATENTS AND PROTECTION OF PATENT RIGHTS › Chapter 25— AMENDMENT AND CORRECTION OF PATENTS › § 254
If the Patent and Trademark Office’s records clearly show it made a mistake in a patent, the Director can issue a free, sealed certificate that explains the error and record it with the patent. A printed copy goes with each printed patent and becomes part of the original patent. The patent with that certificate has the same legal effect as if it had been issued that way at the start. The Director can instead issue a corrected patent for free with the same effect.
