A patent owner living outside the U.S. may file with the Patent Office the name and U.S. address of someone who can accept legal papers about the patent. If that person can’t be found or none was named, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia will handle the case, give notice by publication or other methods, and act as if the owner lived there.
