Each year the President is asked to issue a proclamation naming the second Monday in October as Columbus Day. The proclamation asks officials to fly the U.S. flag on federal buildings that day and invites people to observe the day in schools, churches, or other suitable places with ceremonies honoring the anniversary of the discovery of America.
