Title 38 › Part II— GENERAL BENEFITS › Chapter 17— HOSPITAL, NURSING HOME, DOMICILIARY, AND MEDICAL CARE › Subchapter I— GENERAL › § 1708
The Secretary may provide short-term housing in a Fisher House or another suitable facility for veterans who must travel far for medical exams, treatment, or care, and—if the rules allow—for matters related to VA benefits. Family members and other people who go with the veteran and give family-like support can stay too. A Fisher House is a donated housing facility near a VA medical center, meant for temporary residential use by patients and their supportive companions. The Secretary may charge fees for stays; fee money goes to the medical services account to pay for the lodging. The Secretary must create rules that limit stay length, set fee rules, define who may accompany a veteran, set rules for using the lodging, and add any other needed limits or priorities.
