Title 38 › Part V— BOARDS, ADMINISTRATIONS, AND SERVICES › Chapter 76— HEALTH PROFESSIONALS EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM › Subchapter VIII— SPECIALTY EDUCATION LOAN REPAYMENT PROGRAM › § 7696
You must sign a written agreement before the VA pays you and also follow the rules under 5 U.S.C. 5379(c). You must get a state medical license, finish post-graduate training that makes you eligible for board certification, and then work full-time for the Veterans Health Administration. You must serve 12 months for every $40,000 you receive, but at least 24 months total. You must begin full-time work no later than 60 days after finishing residency unless the Secretary allows a written delay for an accredited fellowship not in the listed specialties, and any delay ends no later than 60 days after that fellowship. If you do not finish your required service, you must pay back an amount calculated as A = B × ((T − S) ÷ T). A is the amount you owe. B is the total payments you received. T is the number of months you were required to serve. S is the whole months you actually served.
