The Appalachian Regional Commission must plan and coordinate economic and community development across the Appalachian region. It has 11 main jobs: create ongoing coordinated plans and set priorities, do research and map the region’s resources and run demonstration projects, review programs and suggest improvements, recommend interstate cooperation and model laws, support local development districts, encourage private investment in industry, business, and recreation, act as the region’s coordinator, hold forums and use advisory councils, promote eco-friendly industrial technologies, coordinate federal economic development efforts in Appalachia, and support broadband access. The Commission must also identify different characteristics of subregions and may set different needs and goals for central, northern, and southern Appalachia.
