Title 40 › Subtitle SUBTITLE II— PUBLIC BUILDINGS AND WORKS › Part A— GENERAL › Chapter 31— GENERAL › Subchapter II— ACQUIRING LAND › § 3111
Federal money cannot be used to buy land or any interest in land unless the Attorney General first gives written approval that the title is good for the government's intended use. The Attorney General can let other federal departments or agencies handle that approval, but still oversees them and can be asked for an opinion or help. Costs to get title certificates or other proof of title may be paid from the land-buying money or the acquiring agency’s contingency funds unless another law or contract says otherwise. This does not change any law about Tennessee Valley Authority land that was in effect on September 1, 1970.
