Any motor vehicle bought and used for official work by a federal agency or by the District of Columbia, inside the United States or its territories, must clearly display on the vehicle the agency’s full name or a title that shows which agency and service it is, and it must show the words "For official use only". The Administrator of General Services makes the rules for how the markings must look. The rules can allow exceptions when marking a vehicle would interfere with the vehicle’s purpose.
