Under rules the Marshal makes and the Chief Justice approves, the Marshal and the Supreme Court Police can protect the Court, people, and property. They may police the Supreme Court building, grounds, and nearby streets; protect the Chief Justice, any Associate Justice, official guests, and Court officers or employees when on duty; and, if the Marshal decides it is needed, protect retired justices or immediate family members. While doing these duties, they can arrest people for violations of federal or state laws or regulations and carry firearms as required under section 6102 of this title, this subchapter, and subchapter IV. If protecting an official guest outside the District of Columbia, Maryland, or Virginia requires carrying a firearm, the Chief Justice or an Associate Justice must sign a written authorization.
