Title 42 › Chapter 145— PUBLIC SAFETY OFFICER MEDAL OF VALOR AND TRIBUTES › § 15204
Defines who counts as a "public safety officer" and what places are called "State" for the chapter. "Public safety officer" means someone working for a public agency, paid or volunteer, as a firefighter, law enforcement officer, or emergency services officer, as decided by the Attorney General (and "law enforcement officer" includes corrections, court, and civil defense officers). "State" means each State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
