§1592n Definitions

Summary

Sets the meanings of important words used in this part of the law. The words can be read as singular or plural unless the text clearly says otherwise. State means the states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories and possessions. Federal agency means departments, officers (including the President), independent agencies and other federal bodies, and government-owned corporations where the United States owns all or most of the stock. Community facility means public services and buildings such as water and sewer systems, trash disposal, police and fire protection, hospitals and libraries, parks, roads, and day-care centers. Community service means running and maintaining those health, sanitation, recreation and day-care facilities and providing fire protection. National defense covers military operations and government work closely tied to them (including work by the Atomic Energy Commission), activities under the Mutual Defense Assistance Act of 1949, as amended, and services needed for towns moved because the Atomic Energy Commission took their land for defense work. Nonprofit agency means an organization whose net earnings do not go to private owners or stockholders. Project means housing or community facilities obtained, built, or improved with financial help under this part. Veteran means a person, or that person’s family, who served in active military or naval service during any of these periods: on or after September 16, 1940, and before July 26, 1947; on or after April 6, 1917, and before November 11, 1918; or on or after June 27, 1950, and before any later date the President sets, and who was discharged under conditions other than dishonorable or is still serving; it also includes the family of someone who served in those periods and died of causes the Secretary of Veterans Affairs finds were service‑connected.
