The Secretary must run research, development, demonstration, and commercial programs to make distributed energy resources and systems more reliable and efficient and to better connect advanced energy technologies to the electric grid. Congress authorized money for those activities: $240,000,000 for fiscal year 2007, $255,000,000 for fiscal year 2008, and $273,000,000 for fiscal year 2009. The Secretary may get whatever funds are needed for the Power Delivery Research Initiative for 2007–2009. From the amounts above, $20,000,000 each for 2007 and 2008 must go to the work under section 16213, and $2,000,000 in 2007 must go to work under section 16215(g).
