Title 42 › Chapter 149— NATIONAL ENERGY POLICY AND PROGRAMS › Subchapter IX— RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT › Part E— Nuclear Energy › § 16277
The Secretary must run a program to improve the United States’ ability to design new reactor technologies using high-performance computer modeling and simulation. The Secretary must coordinate with relevant federal agencies as described by the National Strategic Computing Initiative under Executive Order 13702 (July 29, 2015). The work will use help from the private sector, colleges, and the National Laboratories to build software and tools for advanced nuclear reactors and reactors for space. It must create simulation tools that can be checked by physical experiments and make sure tools are available to researchers and companies. The Secretary must also consider funding extra research to model material wear and fuel behavior and to validate the computer tools. The program must be coordinated to avoid repeating work done by other Department research groups, including the National Laboratories, the Advanced Research Projects Agency–Energy, the Advanced Scientific Computing Research program, and industry.
