§16279c Organization and Administration of Programs

Summary

The Secretary must coordinate and manage nuclear energy research and priorities across the Department, other federal agencies, and the National Laboratories. The Secretary must work with industry, colleges (including minority-serving schools and research reactors), Tribal groups (including Alaska Native Corporations), and international experts, and should encourage projects that bring these partners together. The Secretary must publish project results on Department websites, reports, databases, training materials, and at industry conferences, except where information is protected under section 552(b) of title 5. The Secretary must also support education, outreach, and nonhardware technical help, including work to help rural, Tribal, and low-income communities use nuclear energy commercially. All programs must be reviewed at least annually by the Nuclear Energy Advisory Committee or another independent group. The Secretary must not publish information that would harm national security, as the Secretary decides.
