Claims for legal or other services tied to compensation under subchapter I must be approved by the Secretary, who will set any payment taken from the claimant’s award. Anyone who gets or asks for a fee without that approval, or who solicits such claims, commits a misdemeanor and faces a fine up to $1,000, imprisonment up to one year, or both.
