Title 42 › Chapter 152— ENERGY INDEPENDENCE AND SECURITY › Subchapter V— ACCELERATED RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT › Part E— Miscellaneous Provisions › § 17241
The Secretary of Energy must set up a program as soon as practicable after December 19, 2007 to find ways to make motor vehicles lighter so they use less fuel without making them less safe. The work will look at new strong-but-light materials and processes and at cutting the costs of those materials and of processing, automated manufacture, joining, and recycling for large-scale use (for example, high-strength steel, aluminum, magnesium, metal composites, and carbon-fiber composites). Up to $80,000,000 is authorized for the program for fiscal years 2008 through 2012.
