The Secretary of the Interior, through the Director of the U.S. Geological Survey, must finish a full, countrywide study of geothermal energy resources by January 1, 2012. The Secretary must send a report about the study to the House Committee on Natural Resources and the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources. The Secretary must update that national study at least once every 10 years to help public and private decision-making. Congress authorized $15,000,000 for each fiscal year 2008 through 2012, and such sums as are necessary for fiscal years 2013 through 2022.
