The United States supports updating the electricity grid so it stays reliable, secure, and can handle future growth. It aims to meet these 10 goals that define a Smart Grid: 1) use more digital data and controls to improve reliability, security, and efficiency; 2) run and allocate grid resources dynamically with full cyber‑security; 3) add and connect distributed generation, including renewables; 4) include demand response and energy‑efficiency resources; 5) install smart metering, communications, and distribution automation; 6) integrate smart appliances and devices; 7) deploy advanced storage and peak‑shaving tech, including plug‑in electric/hybrid vehicles and thermal‑storage air conditioning; 8) give consumers timely information and control options; 9) develop communication and interoperability standards for grid equipment; 10) identify and remove unreasonable or unnecessary barriers to adopting smart grid technologies, practices, and services.
