Defines key words used in the chapter. Accompaniment means helping, representing, and going with a woman who seeks court help for child support, custody, restraining orders, restitution, or who files criminal charges; it can include paying court costs and reasonable attorney and witness fees. Eligible institution of higher education means a college or university (as defined in 20 U.S.C. 1001) that runs or will run a pregnant and parenting student services office if it gets a grant. Community service center means a nonprofit that provides local social services directly or under contract with local government. High school means a school with grades 10–12, 9–12, or 7–12. Intervention services means a 24-hour hotline for police help and shelter referrals. Secretary means the Secretary of Health and Human Services. State includes the District of Columbia, any commonwealth, possession, or other U.S. territory, and any Indian tribe or reservation. Supportive social services means temporary and permanent housing, job counseling, and individual or group counseling to prevent domestic violence, sexual violence, sexual assault, or stalking. Violence means actual violence or the risk or threat of violence.
