Title 42 › Chapter 159— SPACE EXPLORATION, TECHNOLOGY, AND SCIENCE › Subchapter V— SPACE SHUTTLE RETIREMENT AND TRANSITION › § 18362
The Administrator must retire the Space Shuttle orbiters on a schedule the Administrator sets and in a way that still allows for using them if needed for the International Space Station. When retiring the orbiters, the Administrator must, as much as possible, use the shuttle workforce, assets, and facilities to help start the follow-on Space Launch System under section 18322. For the people, equipment, and facilities not used this way, the Administrator must work with other federal agencies and the private sector to sell or transfer unneeded assets and help displaced workers with retraining and job placement. Amounts authorized by section 101(2)(B) are available for these activities.
