§1862o–8 Pilot Program of Grants for New Investigators

Title 42 › Chapter 16— NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION › § 1862o–8

Last updated Apr 5, 2026|Official source

Summary

The Director must run a pilot that gives one-year grants to help people improve research proposals the Foundation did not fund. To qualify, a person must not have been a Foundation principal investigator before and must have had a proposal rated excellent (this can include Research in Undergraduate Institutions). Awards are made with program officers’ advice through the Small Grants for Exploratory Research program. Grants must be used to update and resubmit proposals, for example by collecting new data or doing more analysis. The Board must review the pilot—count new investigators funded, show how awards were distributed by type of institution, and report resubmission success—and, no later than 3 years after August 9, 2007, send findings and recommendations to the House Committee on Science and Technology and to the Senate Committees on Commerce, Science, and Transportation and on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions.
