Title 42 › Chapter 16— NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION › § 1862p–1
The Director must run a competitive, merit-reviewed grant program for colleges and universities to fund basic research that creates major improvements in manufacturing technology, processes, and businesses to help U.S. manufacturing work better, be more productive, sustainable, and competitive. Research can cover areas like nanomanufacturing; robots, automation, and smart machines; enterprise systems; sensing and control; materials processing; manufacturing IT including AI and simulations; and additive (3D) manufacturing. The Director must also fund grants to strengthen and expand science and technical education and training for advanced manufacturing, including using the Foundation’s Advanced Technological Education program.
