§18654 Midscale Instrumentation and Research Equipment Program

Summary

The Director must set up a midscale instrumentation and research equipment program to develop, buy, and help bring to market research instruments needed for the Department’s work and for the wider science community. The program must fund new instruments that cost $1,000,000 to $20,000,000 each and that would speed major scientific advances at user facilities. It must also promote partnerships among National Laboratories, user facilities, and colleges, including EPSCoR-funded schools, historically Black colleges and universities, minority-serving institutions, and rural institutions. The Director must coordinate this program with other Office of Science programs and work with the National Laboratories, the Office of Technology Transitions, universities, and industry to identify, share, and commercialize these tools. Up to $150,000,000 is authorized each year for fiscal years 2023 through 2027 from Office of Science funds.
