Title 42 › Chapter 16— NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION › § 1869c
The Director of the National Science Foundation must give scholarships to low-income people so they can get associate, bachelor’s, or graduate degrees in math, engineering, computer science, cybersecurity, or other tech and science programs the Director names. To get a scholarship a person must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, admitted refugee, or lawful permanent resident, file an application when asked, and promise to use the money to enroll or stay in an eligible college program. Awards are based on ability. If applicants tie, winners will be chosen to spread recipients across the country. The Director sets award amounts and may renew a scholarship for up to 5 years. Funds must come from section 1356(s)(3) of title 8. No more than 50 percent of those funds can go to undergraduate curriculum, workforce development, and related uses. Within 60 days after December 8, 2004, the Director had to publish a list of eligible study programs in the Federal Register.
