The Director must, within 120 days after August 9, 2022, hire a qualified independent group to review how the Broader Impacts review criterion is used across the Foundation and to recommend ways to better meet the goals in section 1862p–14. The Director must also award competitive grants to colleges, nonprofit groups, or consortia to help make the Broader Impacts criterion easier and more effective to use. Grants can fund training for program officers, peer reviewers, grants staff, faculty, and students; shared collections of best practices; and tools to measure and document research’s societal impacts.
