Title 42 › CHAPTER 19B — WATER RESOURCES PLANNING › SUBCHAPTER IV — MISCELLANEOUS PROVISIONS › § 1962d–5g
The Secretary of the Army, through the Chief of Engineers, must study the best ways to use hydroelectric power at Army water projects and make a plan from the results. The study must look at the physical potential and the economic, social, environmental, and institutional factors that affect it; how much power is needed and where; how hydro fits with other power sources; timing to meet future demand; types of hydro (like high-head, low-head, run-of-river, and pumped storage); whether more storage or different operating rules at existing Corps projects could raise power output; steps to make the most of hydro resources; and any other important issues. Within three years after the first funds are provided for this work, the Secretary must send the plan, supporting studies, and recommendations to the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works and the House Committee on Public Works and Transportation. Up to $7,000,000 is authorized to carry out the study and plan. The Secretary may also do feasibility studies of specific high‑potential hydro installations found during the study, with up to $5,000,000 per fiscal year authorized for each of fiscal years 1978 and 1979.
