Title 42 › CHAPTER 21 — CIVIL RIGHTS › SUBCHAPTER VI — EQUAL EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES › § 2000e–3
Employers, job agencies, unions, and groups that run apprenticeships or training must not punish or treat worse any worker, job applicant, or union member because they complained about illegal discrimination or because they made a charge, testified, helped, or took part in an investigation, hearing, or other enforcement action. Those same groups must not put job notices or ads that say they prefer, limit, or exclude people because of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. One narrow exception allows saying a preference for religion, sex, or national origin only when it is truly required for the job.
