Moves the job of running hospitals and protecting the health of Indians from the Department of the Interior and its Indian affairs offices to the Surgeon General of the United States Public Health Service, under the Secretary of Health and Human Services. Hospitals serving a particular tribe may not be closed before July 1, 1956 unless the tribe’s governing body agrees. With the consent of the Indian people served, the Secretary may contract with private or other non‑Federal health agencies to provide health services on a fee‑for‑service, prepayment, or similar basis.
