§2297g–2 Department Facilities

Summary

The National Academy of Sciences must study how to reduce decontamination and decommissioning costs and report to Congress within 3 years after October 24, 1992. The report must say what cleanup each facility needs, list alternative technologies, include site surveys of actual contamination, and give cost estimates. The Fund must pay all Department decontamination and decommissioning costs until the Secretary certifies and Congress, by law, agrees the work is finished. Annual cleanup at the Department’s gaseous diffusion plants is paid from the Fund if money is sufficient; if not, the Department must pay. This does not remove the Department’s legal cleanup duties under federal and state law.
