Title 42 › CHAPTER 6A — PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE › SUBCHAPTER I — ADMINISTRATION AND MISCELLANEOUS PROVISIONS › Part B — Miscellaneous Provisions › § 238a
If the heads of the departments agree, the Immigration and Naturalization Service can let the Public Health Service use hospitals at immigration stations to care for Public Health Service patients. The Surgeon General must pay the INS back for actual utility and supply costs, such as fuel, electricity, water, and phone service; that money goes into the INS appropriation or may come from law‑allowed working funds. The INS cannot charge for building upkeep. If the INS asks the Public Health Service to care for someone detained in a PHS hospital, the INS must reimburse the Surgeon General unless the person is covered under section 249(a).
