Title 42 › Chapter 6A— PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE › Subchapter II— GENERAL POWERS AND DUTIES › Part C— Hospitals, Medical Examinations, and Medical Care › § 248
The Surgeon General must, under rules, run and maintain all Public Health Service hospitals and stations. That includes repairs, patient care and hospital stays, providing prosthetic and orthopedic devices, and—if the President agrees—choosing and opening new sites when needed. The Surgeon General must also arrange and pay for patient transfers between hospitals when needed. The Surgeon General must decide what to do with items patients make while being treated—either let the patient keep them or sell them and put the money into the same government fund that bought the materials. The Surgeon General must handle money and belongings of patients who die in custody, and if no other public or private funds exist, must pay to prepare and move remains or cover reasonable burial costs.
