§254c–1a Grants to Nurse-managed Health Clinics

Summary

Provides money to help run nurse-managed health clinics. Comprehensive primary health care services — the primary care services listed in another law (section 254b(b)(1)). Nurse-managed health clinic — a practice run by advanced practice nurses that gives primary care or wellness services to underserved or vulnerable people and is tied to a nursing school, a federally qualified health center, or an independent nonprofit health or social services agency. To get a grant, an organization must be that kind of clinic and apply to the Secretary. The application must promise that nurses deliver most care and at least one advanced practice nurse is in executive management; that the clinic will keep offering comprehensive care or wellness services regardless of a patient’s income or insurance during the grant; and that the clinic will set up a community advisory committee within 90 days of receiving the grant, with most members being people the clinic serves. The Secretary decides grant amounts based on the clinic’s financial need and other factors. Congress authorized $50,000,000 for fiscal year 2010 and whatever sums are needed for 2011 through 2014.
