Summary

If money is provided, the Secretary must run a short test program to let people who qualify for the health worker Loan Repayment Program finish their required service by working in a State, local, or tribal health department that serves areas with too few health workers or areas at risk of a public health emergency, as the Secretary decides. To join, a person must follow the Loan Repayment Program rules (except for one specific rule in that program) and agree to work there for 2 years or longer. The test program and any providers chosen for it will not be counted when deciding which places are official health professional shortage areas during fiscal years 2007 through 2010. Not later than 3 years after December 19, 2006, the Secretary must send Congress a report on how the test went, its effects on the health departments, and whether these placements should be allowed permanently. Money may be appropriated as needed for each of fiscal years 2007 through 2010.
